On Monday, 25 August 2025, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, the Departments of Education and Health, as well as Non-Profit Organizations, hosted Mentoring a Boy Child event at Wozanibone Intern Farm School in Kameelzynkraal, Northern Corridor.
The initiative forms part of the Department’s broader commitment to positive youth development, specifically addressing the social, emotional, and psychological needs of young boys. Through mentorship and education, the programme aims to equip learners with the tools and values necessary to make responsible decisions, face challenges, and grow into confident, resilient leaders.The day featured sessions led by experienced facilitators and guest speakers. Topics included substance abuse prevention, sexual orientation and gender identity, coping with grief, and strengthening mental health resilience. Social workers and educators created a safe, inclusive space for learners to ask questions, share experiences, and gain practical life skills.Mr. Gladstone Baloyi from the Department of Social Development emphasized the long-term impact of such mentorship. “When we mentor a boy child, we invest in tomorrow’s leaders,” he said. “Empowering boys to make positive life choices is a shared responsibility and one that builds stronger families and safer communities.”The programme concluded with reflections from learners and stakeholders, emphasizing the Department’s commitment to leaving no child behind in the pursuit of education, wellness, and personal development.
