The Gauteng Provincial Government "Request a Slot" campaign is making inroads.

At the start of October over 20 000 motorists used the web-based license renewal booking system which allocated them a booking slot within 30 days.

Launched in September, campaign is aimed at improving customer experience after the province accounted for the highest number of licences not yet renewed at 437 819 out of a total of 980 038 expired licences.

The licences expired during the COVID-19 hard lockdown period extending from March 26, 2020, to date.

Despite the extension of the grace period for licence renewals set for March 31, 2022, Department of Roads and Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the campaign is gaining momentum.

"The feedback that we are receiving from the public on the Request a Slot Campaign has been positive and we, therefore, urge members of the public not to wait until the eleventh hour and renew their driver's licenses now," said Mamabolo.

Previously, a notice on slot availability was sent to those cardholders whose licenses were soon to expire without them asking for it.

Now the onus is on cardholders to take the initiative and make the request.

Mamabolo appealed to applicants to honour their appointments (slots) or at least communicate about not making it through on time. This will ensure slots are allocated to others.

Requests for a slot can be made at the following email addresses:

Alternatively, online bookings can be made on https://online.natis.gov.za
