Gauteng government plans to administer at least 100 000 COVID-19 vaccines a day, this is according to Premier David Makhura.

Premier Makhura was speaking during his visit to Witkoppen Clinic in Fourways, Johannesburg on Tuesday, he said this would be achieved by working with private sector to ensure that the vaccines are accessible.

"We aim to double our vaccination sites and increase vaccinations to 100,000 a day. Last week we reached 61,000 per day," Makhura said.

Premier Makhura undertook the oversight visit to various vaccination sites as part of monitoring the province's vaccination roll-out programme.   The Witkoppen Clinic has vaccinated more than 10,400 people since its opening three weeks ago.

Makhura said the province would ramp up vaccination by opening more vaccination sites, in the public sector to more than 500.

"Every vaccination site is going to double the number of people being vaccinated, but we are also doubling the number of actual vaccination sites," he said.

During his day-long walkabout he also visited a newly opened drive-through vaccination site on 49 West Street in Houghton.

All public vaccination sites in Gauteng accept walk-ins, whether people are registered on the EVDS (electronic vaccination data system) or not.
