Department of Community Safety 2025/05/30 - 08:03
In South Africa, May is celebrated as Workers’ Month, a time to honor the dedication and hard work of those serving our communities. As part of the celebration, the Internal Communication team spoke with one of our dedicated ambassadors, Tshifhiwa Mushaphi, to learn more about his career journey within the Department and his experiences.
"I am Tshifhiwa Mushaphi. I was born and raised in Phiphidi, a small village in Venda, Limpopo Province. Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a Traffic Officer.
I studied at Lyceum College and obtained a Diploma in Traffic Management. My career began in January 2017 when I was given an opportunity to serve as a patroller under the South African Police Service at the Hillbrow Station. Later that year, I was selected for training as a Traffic Warden at Boekenhoutkloof Traffic College in Pretoria, where I obtained my Traffic Warden certificate.
From 2018 to 2021, I worked as a Safety Ambassador for Hillbrow SAPS. In March 2021, I secured a permanent position as a Messenger (Level 3) at the Department of Community Safety. In June 2024, I was promoted to the position of Transport Officer (Level 7).
I am proud of my progress, from patroller to transport officer, and I’m pleased to be applying my qualifications in a practical and impactful way. My current role presents exciting challenges and responsibilities, including:
- Issuing trip authorities, conducting inspections, and managing exceptions and operations
- Managing G-Fleet GG vehicles (both owned and leased)
- Compiling payment documentation for G-Fleet and departmental vehicles
- Ensuring compliance with audit queries
- Managing fuel claims for Scheme A and Scheme B
I truly enjoy my work as a Transport Officer because I like helping people and learning new things. This role not only contributes to my professional growth but also supports the overall productivity of the Department.
I chose a career in public service because I believe in making a difference in the community. What motivates me most is the personal growth I’ve experienced within the Department and the encouragement I receive from the people around me. I'm also driven by setting goals and seeing steady progress, no matter how small.
Outside of work, I lead a simple life. I enjoy going to church and reading my Bible.
In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Department for giving me this opportunity. Above all, I thank God, who has been by my side throughout this journey."
