Deadline for License Renewal Fast Approaching

Department of Roads and Transport 2021/07/21 - 22:00

The national lockdown imposed on the country in 2020 forced licensing centres to close, resulting in backlog of expired licences.

The Minister of Transport subsequently announced an extension for all learner licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving cards and professional driving licences that expired from 26 March 2020 to31 December 2020, deeming them valid for a grace period ending 31 August 2021.

As the deadline fast approaches, members of the public are encouraged to take advantage of the extended operating hours at various licensing centres to renew their licences before the deadline.

Tips on licence renewals:

  • Do not wait until the exact expiry date before considering to renew your vehicle/driving licence;
  • Allow at least four weeks lead time from the date of application for delivery of your driving licence card;
  • Apply for your driving licence early to avoid having to apply for a temporary driving licence at an extra cost
  • When applying for your driving licence, present the following to your nearest DLTC;
  1. Original ID and a copy, old driving licence card or a valid SA passport;
  2. Four black and white ID photographs;
  3. Proof of residence;
  4. Licence renewal fee.
