Drug abuse a sore point for Tshwane residents

Gauteng MEC for Social Development Morakane Mosupyoe indicated that the scourge of substance abuse is an internal battle which comprises of several personal challenges to those who are addicted.

The MEC made this statement at the Refilwe Taxi Rank, East of Tshwane, which has been identified as one of the drugs hotspots in the Tshwane Region, during a departmental service delivery blitz last week Friday.

MEC Mosupyoe said, "To address some of these challenges we have resolved to further popularize our various intervention programs especially to the service users (drug addicts) so that they can make informed decisions about their future henceforth".

Speaking to the service users, Mosupyoe indicated that they should take this opportunity and access these services which are rehabilitation, after-care programs and skills development through the departmental centers of excellence.

MEC indicated that the day's program was a follow-up on the recommendations of the Gauteng Legislature Portfolio Committee on Social Development to continuously disseminate information on departmental services.

The blitz was in line with the three pillars of the Drug Master Plan which are Demand Reduction which speaks to awareness and prevention, Harm Reduction with which includes referral, treatment and after care and finally Supply Reduction which looks at law enforcement on eliminating proliferation of drugs.
