The adjudication process for the Gauteng Sports Awards (GSA) is underway, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation announced on Friday. 

"The adjudication panel has started going through the submitted nominations. We hope you submitted sufficient evidence or motivation for your nominees. Can't wait to see the finalists," spokesperson, Nomazwe Ntlokwana said

Nominees who have made it to the final list will be announced by 15 October with the main event billed for 31 October 2021. 

These prestigious awards are aimed at celebrating and rewarding excellence among the remarkable men and women of sport in the province who, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, gave their best.   

A total 19 categories are up for grabs in this year's edition with three new categories introduced, one of which necessitated by having to go online due to existing Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

The three new categories are; Online/Virtual Sport or Recreation programme implemented, the aMaYanga-Yanga athlete of the year, and the Sports Federation of the Year.  

"The online sport and recreation category will be awarded to the best programme produced and implemented virtually which assisted sport and recreation to continue, during COVID-19 lockdown. 

"The second category is the 'aMayangayanga' which targets young athletes below the age of 14. It seeks to recognize newly discovered individuals, male or female including those with a disability who show potential in terms of performance and participation," said Ntlokwana.
