MEC visits Agro Village in Marievale, Nigel

Department of Social Development 2020/10/19 - 22:00

The Gauteng Social Development MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi visited the Marievale Military Agro Village in Nigel to inspect the Project.

The project is a partnership between the Department of Defence and the Gauteng Department of Social Development to alleviate poverty and ensure self-sustainability among the community.

MEC Mokgethi was received and hosted by Major General Tyhalisi, a commander of the Army Support Formation.

"The project is a poverty alleviation initiative that brings unemployed women in a social welfare system together with military spouses and veterans to form cooperatives in order to farm on the military base land and make a living," said the MEC.

This initiative by the state will create jobs for vulnerable women while fighting hunger and poverty in a manner that reduces state dependency.

Last year in December, the Gauteng Provincial Government launched the Gauteng anti-poverty strategy which, amongst other things, intends to expose communities and support them in self-sustaining activities.

Finer details of how the project will unfold will be announced in a formal launch which will happen soon.
