The group Youth 20 (Y20) South Africa, a youth-led platform kicked off in Gauteng.
As the official youth engagement group of the G20, Y20 serves as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and action, ensuring that young voices contribute meaningfully to global decision-making.
Under the theme "Uniting for Solidarity, Championing Equality, Driving Sustainability," young representatives from G20 nations gathered in Gauteng to shape the global agenda.
The topics under discussion are climate change and environmental sustainability, inclusive economic growth and employment, AI digital innovation and the future of work, reforming multilateralism and inclusive social development, and fighting inequality.
MEC of Education and Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, delivered his welcome address on behalf of the Gauteng Province.
He stated that "Y20 should be a platform of substantive dialogue where participants share ideas and propose actionable steps to the most pressing challenges of our time".
Former Deputy President of South Africa and G20 Social Summit Convener Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka offered her message of support.
Mlambo Ngcuka encouraged the participants to discuss critical issues that affect the world. She further emphasised that women should be placed at the core.
Key delegates, including Eskom Board member Tryphosa Ramano, Candice Moodley of the Energy & Water Sector Training Authority (EWSETA), the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, and Dr. Sunshine Myende, Executive Chair of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its potential to drive youth-led change.
