More than 445 graduates celebrated their achievements at a two-day mass graduation ceremony hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) at the Brixton Multi-Purpose Centre on Tuesday.
The graduates completed programmes in solar installation, paving, handyman skills, welding, hospitality, computer proficiency, beauty services, renewable energy technologies, and security services.
These programmes are offered through various non-profit organisations (NPOs) funded by the Department of Social Development.
Speaking at the graduation, MEC Faith Mazibuko said the programme was created as part of Premier Panyaza Lesufi's vision for the iCrush no'Lova Jobs and Skills Programme, an extension of Nasi iSpani. The initiative aims to address the province's unemployment challenges by providing skills development, training, and meaningful job opportunities.
"Our goal is to reduce youth unemployment, and we are achieving this through expanded youth skills development programmes.
"Since we started the programme, almost 95,000 individuals have benefited from these empowerment initiatives, enabling them to become self-reliant, pursue independent work, and achieve financial independence.
The MEC encouraged the graduates to support their families as they embark on their careers and contribute positively to Gauteng's socio-economic development.
National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Nonhlanhla Dlamini said they are committed to working with the provincial government and stakeholders to ensure more young people have access to funding, mentorship, and platforms for innovation and development.
Beneficiary from Bambisandla Sam and former drug addict, Tsholo Tele, said the programme has been a game changer for her life .
"When I was 18 years old, I started experimenting with drugs. I was incarcerated in 2022. I found myself on the streets and living under bridges. I was so hooked that no one wanted anything to do with me.
"After six weeks of rehabilitation, I joined a one-year programme at a halfway house, and during that year, I discovered who I am. I also completed a skills programme at Bambisandla Sam, which motivated me to pursue counselling.
"The certificate from Bambisandla Sam opened doors for me. I now have my own women's skills centre in Germiston," said Tele.
