Newly built Braamfischerville Primary School officially welcomes learners to 2025 calendar

As the Department of Education welcomed back learners and teachers from the inland schools in the new academic year (2025) on the 15 January, the MEC for Department of Infrastructure Development and COGTA Jacob Mamabolo visited Braamfischerville Primary School in Soweto to assess the readiness of teaching and learning. The newly built state-of-the-art project located at City of Johannesburg Municipality has changed the face of the community with the birth of a new school that will replace the old one built from prefabricated metal structures.
The school readiness programme was led by MEC for Infrastructure Development and COGTA Jacob Mamabolo, accompanied by Education MEC Matome Chiloane. Both MECs engaged with learners and teachers ensuring that resources and systems are ready, up and running for the academic year. In attendance were HoD for DID Ms. Masabata Mutlaneng, Education and STARS DDG Makwena Selepe, Project Manager Octavia Khomane, Councillor, SGB members and other dignitaries.
This is a replacement school which was constructed following the latest requirements from GDE and GDID of brick-and-mortar standards whilst complying with the current applicable national building regulations and standards. The prefabricated school building consisted of 32 ordinary classrooms and accommodated 1329 learners from grades 1 to 7. The upgraded school comprises of 28 classrooms which accommodates a total of 1270 learners from grades R to 7.
The scope of works consists of Admin block, Grade R to 7 classrooms, Library, Computer lab, Multi-purpose centre, Guard house, Plant room, Sports facility, Refuse yard, Generator room and a combined Nutrition centre/ Hall. The existing school's classrooms were decanted I phases to allow construction space and access to works by contractor.
The programme started off with MEC Chiloane addressing the learners and teachers at assembly and welcoming them back to the new academic year. The attendees, learners and teachers proudly sang the National Anthem, and the South African Flag was raised up in the sky. MEC Chiloane further encouraged learners to perform better this academic year.
"The Department of Infrastructure Development has proudly delivered this R105 million, modern, state-of-the art facility for quality teaching and learning to take place. I am sure Braamfischerville Primary School will be able to survive extreme weather conditions related to climate change. This school complies with all the laws, regulations and standards that are applicable to the built and construction environment. We want to thank all those who have participated in the construction of this school, including Contractors, Subcontractors, Professional Service Providers and Expanded Public Works participants (EPWP). To the community, learners, and teachers, I plead with you to keep this school in good condition and report any vandalism to the authorities," said MEC Mamabolo.
MEC Chiloane furthermore commended DID for the delivery of stunning facility, "You have delivered a beautiful school, I am happy with the quality of the school. to my children, please keep the school in good condition and produce good results. This school is here to serve you and this community will be a shining star in future. We will be proud of these learners one day," concludes MEC Chiloane.
