GETTING TO KNOW WOMEN IN SAFETY Every Obstacle is an Opportunity for Growth

Department of Community Safety 2025/08/12 - 22:00

My name is Mbali Nyembe. I was born and raised in Diepkloof, one of Gauteng's largest zones located on the eastern border of Soweto township. I was brought up single-handedly by my loving mother, who instilled in me strong values of determination and diligence — values that ultimately led me to a career in safety.

A personal encounter with crime marked the beginning of my journey in this field. That experience inspired me to take action and join the Fight Against Crime movement, volunteering as a Youth Desk Member. In 2012, I joined the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Social Crime Prevention Programme as a Liaison Officer in Lenasia South, where my passion for law enforcement deepened. I later enrolled at Boekenhoutkloof Traffic College and, in 2015, obtained my Diploma in Traffic Management.

Throughout my career, I have been driven by a deep desire to make a positive impact in my community, particularly in addressing crime-related challenges. My journey in safety and law enforcement is rooted in my dream of contributing to a safer Gauteng for all. Working across various units within the Gauteng Department of Community Safety has exposed me to challenges that sharpened my leadership skills and motivated me to strive towards being the best-performing female Safety Ambassador. I am privileged to work alongside experienced and dedicated professionals who have made a significant impact on my career growth.

As a Traffic Officer, my responsibilities include enforcing traffic laws, responding to traffic emergencies, and educating communities about the importance of adhering to road safety regulations. Through Road Safety Awareness Programmes, we aim to preserve lives and protect all road users in Gauteng. The fulfilment I feel in knowing that I am actively contributing to the change I want to see in our province is beyond measure.

Being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession, I am proud to serve as a role model for young women aspiring to careers in safety and law enforcement. I value the opportunity to challenge and break societal barriers and stereotypes that discourage women from exploring diverse career paths.

Building resilient economies for women in South Africa requires a multifaceted approach. This includes ensuring access to quality education, training, economic opportunities, and supportive environments that empower women to take on leadership roles and become entrepreneurs. In honour of the more than 20 000 women who marched for liberation in 1956, we must unite to dismantle systemic barriers that prevent women from fully participating in the economy.

The secret to success lies in remembering that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth. My message to women is this – remain determined, stay focused, and never lose sight of your worth. The power to achieve greatness lies in your capable hands.
