More than 30 participants enrolled in a farming training programme facilitated by the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in partnership with the Philani Development Community Centre in Zuurbekom, Western Corridor, are set to graduate soon after completing free training in agriculture.
According to centre administrator Thandiwe Sikhakhane, most of the soon-to-be graduates are from Bekkersdal, Zenzele, Mohlakeng, and Simunye and they are eagerly anticipating the day they will receive their certificates.
The training focused on plant production and soil management, beginning with hands-on lessons. Some of the crops, planted as part of the training, are already thriving and ready for harvest.“They planted spinach, lettuce, pumpkin, green peppers, and spring onions, and they’re now looking forward to reaping what they sowed,” said Sikhakhane. “Despite transportation challenges, trainees remained committed. They attend classes at the centre daily, where we provide breakfast and lunch.”Sikhakhane added that most participants already have ideas for what they'll do after graduating. “We encourage them to start their own businesses or cooperatives, especially since government funding is available. We also ensure continued support and monitor their progress closely.”One of the beneficiaries, Lesego Goba, shared how she discovered the programme while Philani was conducting community outreach in her area.“My friends and I visited t heir stall and learned about the different services offered. When I heard they had agriculture training, I didn’t hesitate, I completed the application and submitted it right away,” said Goba. “I’ve always been passionate about farming, and I had been searching for this kind of opportunity. I’m grateful to Philani and the Gauteng Department of Social Development forgiving us this chance to build our future, free of charge.”Phyllis Malope, founder of the Philani Community Development Centre, expressed her pride in the current cohort.“They’ve shown great commitment. We’re looking forward to welcoming the next group in July,” she said. “We urge young people not to sit idle while waiting for opportunities from big institutions. They can take the first step now, and Philani is here to help, from training to assisting with cooperative and NPO applications.”
