Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development Lebohang Maile and City of Johannesburg MMC for Human Settlements Mlungisi Mabaso visited the flood-hit Nancefield Hostel on Monday. 
More than 300 families were forced to flee hostel after the weekend's torrential rains flooded the hostel. The South African Weather Service issued a Level 6 warning of strong winds, rainfall, and possible localised flooding.
The construction of the bridge on Klipspruit Valley Road, which is currently underway, is suspected of have contributed to the flooding by forcing the water stream to flow towards the hostel.
Briefing the media at the site, Maile said as an immediate intervention, temporary structures will be erected at the hostel and the Dlamini Multipurpose Hall to accommodate residents living in dilapidated structures.
"The City of Joburg has already appointed a contractor that will help us, and another hall has been identified". "The commitment is there, from both the Province, the City, and the National Department of Human Settlements, to find short-term and long-term solutions," said Maile.
 MMC Mabaso said consultants have been appointed and have been on-site to upgrade the informal settlements. 
"We had an engagement with the MEC that there will be coordination from the city and the provincial government. There will be some technical team that will be established so that the resources complement each other in the redeveloping of the hostel," said Mabaso.
Gauteng residents are urged to exercise caution during heavy rains by contacting their respective Municipal Disaster Management Centres at the risk of being in danger.
