MEC MAILE REACTION ON TSHWANE COUNCIL SITTING COLLAPSE 29 January 2020 MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA Lebogang Maile, has been made aware that City of Tshwane’s council sitting could not conclude its business as planned today. “We are concerned about the collapse of today’s council sitting in Tshwane. Order needs to be restored and councillors must act in a manner that puts the interests of residents first”, said MEC Maile. It is reported that today’s council sitting collapsed after opposition parties objected to Speaker, Katlego Mathebe presiding over the sitting. “We will seek a report from the Speaker, including from the Whips, on the underlying reasons which led to the collapse of the sitting. There should be serious consequences for anyone responsible”, continued MEC Maile. According to MEC Maile “a strong message needs to be sent out to all municipal councils and councillors around the province that the days of arbitrarily collapsing council sittings in furtherance of parochial partisan political interests, at the expense of service delivery are well and truly over”. Lastly, MEC Maile said,”we will not hesitate to take stern action against councillors that participate in the arbitrary collapse of Council sittings,at great expense to taxpayers who are the ones who foot the bill and yet don’t get the benefit of service delivery as a result of this irresponsible behaviour.” Contact: Castro Ngobese Spokesperson: MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA Mobile: 0609977790 Email: castro.ngobese@gauteng.gov.za
