Call For Public Members To Serve On Mental Health Review Board - Deadline Extension

The Provincial Health Department is inviting nominations for the appointment of members to mental review boards.  Suitably qualified candidates will be considered and appointed by the MEC for Health, Dr Bandile Masuku.  Appointed members will serve on the Mental Health Care Review Boards of health institutions providing Mental Health Care Services in the province for a period of three years starting 1 July 2020. This is in line with terms of the Mental Health Care Act, No. 17 of 2002.


In order to be considered for appointment nominees must fit the following criteria:

  1. All nominees must be South African citizens;
  2. The nominee must be a Mental Health Care Practitioner; or
  3. A Magistrate, an Attorney or an Advocate admitted in terms of the law of the Republic of South Africa; and
  4. Member or members of the community concerned.

Nominations will be for appointment as members of the Mental Health Review Board for the following Health Districts / Institutions:

  1. Johannesburg
  2. Tshwane
  3. Ekurhuleni
  4. West rand
  5. Sedibeng

Nominations in respect of the professional categories mentioned above must ensure valid registration with the relevant professional bodies / Board and / or are admitted by law to the relevant profession.

The powers and functions of the Review Board will be as follow:

  1. Consider appeals against decisions of the head of a health establishment;
  2. Make decisions with regard to assisted or involuntary mental health care, treatment and rehabilitation services;
  3. Consider reviews and make decisions on assisted involuntary mental health care users;
  4. Consider 72-hours assessment made by the head of health care establishment and make decisions to provide further involuntary care, treatment and rehabilitation;
  5. Consider applications for transfer of mental health care users to maximum security facilities; and
  6. Consider periodic reports on the mental health status of mentally ill prisoners.

All nominations for consideration must be accompanied by the following documents:

  1. Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae.
  2. Certified copies of educational qualifications.
  3. Certified copies of valid registration relevant to the applicable profession. (not required for the community members)
  4. Certified copy of identity document.
  5. Certified copy of proof of admissions to the practice in the case of magistrates/attorney’s/advocates. (not required for the community members)
  6. Consent in writing by the nominee to serve on the Review Board.

The closing date for submissions is: Friday, 12th June 2020.
