Mr Paul Mashatile
MEC FOR HUMAN SETTLEMENT and COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE & TRADITIONAL AFFAIRS
Former Gauteng Premier, Paul Mashatile has been appointed as the MEC for Human Settlements, Cooperative Government, and Traditional Affairs.
Mashatile has vast experience in government. He previously held several portfolios – Gauteng Premier and Minister of Arts and Culture. Before the appointment, he was a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) as Leader of the House.
With his wealth of experience in government he will bring more impetus to the implementation of new mega human settlements and in building greater co-operation between the provincial and local spheres of government.
As a student, Mashatile was an activist in the struggle against apartheid as a member of the Congress of South African Students, and was the co-founder and first president of the Alexandra Youth Congress. He was detained without trial from 1985-1989, and participated in a nationwide protest by engaging in an 18-day hunger strike. When the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party were unbanned in 1990, he helped re-establish them and continued to organize on their behalf.
As MEC for Human Settlements, Mashatile is tasked with providing Gauteng residents with human settlements and coordinating the effective functioning of local government to promote sustainable development in communities.
