Tourism plays a vital role in the South African and the Gauteng economy. It has also become one of the biggest contributing industries to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment in the world. Furthermore Gauteng is the gateway to and the economic powerhouse of the Southern African region and provides great economic opportunity, cultural vitality, concerts and ethnic diversity.
Tourism is among the key eleven sectors identified as growth driver as township tourism is our game-changer in tandem with community tourism whose intention is to mobilize youth to take interest in oral history of their communities so as to accrue the benefits associated with township tourism. Thus the township tourism program focusses on the provision of a wide range, world-class customer focused and vibrant visitor experience.
The Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA), an agency of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development is responsible for developing, promoting, coordinating and facilitating responsible and sustainable tourism in the Gauteng global city region. The agency is also tasked with creating a world-class destination that attracts business visitors and all other tourists to the province, benefits our people, and contributes to job creation and economic growth.
The Entity's strategic goals are to create and promote a world-class tourist destination; contribute towards tourism sector industry development; facilitate industry coordination and cooperative governance; foster a responsible and sustainable tourism industry; and implement progressive corporate governance practices.
