Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa

Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, was appointed on 29 May 2019 as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development. 


Personal Information


Dr Ramokgopa was born in January 1975 in Atteridgeville, Tshwane. He attended Seaparankwe Lower Primary School, proceeded to Patogeng Higher Primary School and finished his High School education at Hofmeyr High School.


Previous Positions


He was elected as the Mayor of the City of Tshwane in 2010, and served in that position until 2016.  He previously served as the CEO of the Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC), an entity of the City of Johannesburg, and of the Johannesburg Market. Dr Ramokgopa is the Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Trade Investment in Limpopo.

Dr Ramokgopa is a member of the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in Gauteng. He has held a number of leadership roles, which include South African Student Congress (SASCO) Branch Chairperson at the then University of Durban Westville (1995-1996); he was later appointed the Secretary General of the Student Representative Council (SRC) in 1997; and also, served as African National Congress (ANC) Tshwane Emma Sathekge (Ward 51) Branch Chairperson; he served as the ANC Atteridgeville Zonal Chair between 2003-2004. 



His qualifications include a PhD from the University of Pretoria, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pretoria, a Master of Business Leadership from the University of South Africa, a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Durban-Westville, and a Certificate in Executive Leadership from the University of Stellenbosch.


Key Responsibilities


In his portfolio, Dr Ramokgopa's responsibilities include ensuring transformation and modernisation of the economy and building township economies by supporting the development of township enterprises, cooperatives and SMMEs that produce goods and services and participate in the mainstream economy. He will drive the building of sustainable partnerships with the key role players in the economy to promote growth and employment in the province.
