About Community Safety

To realise Gauteng as a safe and secure province.


The mandate of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety is to ensure effective oversight over the province’s law enforcement agencies and to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities in the province. In addition, the Department is the lead Department in implementing Provincial Outcome 3 which ensures that ‘all people in South Africa are and feel safe’.



The Department continued to subscribe to the following values:

  • Transparency.

The Department believes that it is through the inculcation of these values, that it will be able to transform itself into an empowered and developmentally oriented government institution.

The Department of Community Safety works to ensure that Gauteng is a safe and secure province. Its responsibilities include monitoring policing agencies, implementing crime-prevention initiatives, managing traffic, educating citizens about public safety and improving the relationship between communities and law enforcem​ent agencies.
